Assuming that cosmic rays are coupled to galactic matter on a large scale, the authors work out the longitudinal distributions of γ-ray flux in two energy ranges, namely 35 - 100 MeV and >100 MeV. The results suggest a strong coupling between the cosmic rays and the matter, supporting the supernova hypothesis for the origin of cosmic rays. In addition, interstellar electron spectra with intensities substantially greater than those currently used are required to reproduce the observed γ-ray flux in the 35 - 100 MeV range.
