Examination of materials collected by Luna-24 in the vicinity of its landing site southeast of the Mare Crisium showed the absence of some of the six kinds of materials whose presence had been predicted on the basis of an analysis of photographs. The materials in question are: surface basalts, mare filling, hill material of extrusive origin, material from dark patches, material from nearby highlands, and ray material. It is suggested that Luna-24 landed on an ejecta blanket associated with a postmare crater (perhaps Fahrenheit) and that the sampled regolith layer is the product of a rather short reworking of these ejecta.
