Masking by earth's mantle of magnetic-field variations originating in the core is investigated. The frequency and pulse characteristics of the mantle as a linear LF filter are determined by assuming a relatively thin conducting layer. Green's function is obtained and used to derive a solution for an arbitrary spatial-temporal relation between the core and the magnetic field. A simple technique for approximating the core magnetic field from variations observed at earth's surface is outlined which takes into account the masking effect of the mantle and does not require a spectral expansion of the magnetic-field in powers of frequency.
