A brief survey is presented of observations regarding the magnetic fields in the solar system, taking into account also an interpretation of the obtained information. The discussion is confined to low-frequency magnetic fields with frequencies less than approximately 1 Hz. Attention is given to aspects of magnetic field generation, the dipole fields in the solar system, the origin of the dipole fields, crust magnetic fields, and questions of dipole reversal. It is pointed out that the dipole field of the planet Mars might currently be in a state of dipole reversal. Such a condition would account for the failure to detect a Martian dipole field at the present time.
