A new spectrometer has been developed for rocket-borne measurements of the near infrared absorption spectrum of the upper atmosphere. The spectrometer is based on multichannel spectroscopy and uses a one-dimensional photodiode array as an image scanner. Rocket-borne measurements of the NIR absorption spectrum of atmospheric constituents such as O2 and H2O have been successfully carried out with negligible distortion due to the rocket motion. The time of scanning for a spectrum is 10 ms. A microcomputer-based PCM data processing system designed for use with the spectrometer is also described.
