Phenomena associated with the collective behavior of stellar systems are discussed, focusing on the problem of spiral structure of galaxies. The density wave theory in a relatively complete form makes it possible to formulate a dynamical classification of spiral galaxies. Realistic galaxy models were found to support discrete unstable spiral modes. Modes can be unstable or stable and they can be either normal spiral modes or barred spiral modes, depending on the properties of the equilibrium model. A tentative proposal is that these modes correspond to normal spiral galaxies and transition barred galaxies along with some barred galaxies. Issues related to such a proposal are addressed.
