Preliminary results of a survey of about 40 interplanetary shocks observed on ISEE-3, using 35-56-keV 3-dimensional proton-anisotropy parameters, are presented. Upstream anisotropies in the solar wind frame are generally field aligned, with flow away from the shock, whereas downstream anisotropies vary from moderate field-aligned anisotropies with flow away from the shock to isotropy. The largest anisotropies are associated with perpendicular shocks. An intensity enhancement at about 90-deg pitch angles is observed in association with perpendicular shocks. These results are interpreted as evidence for Fermi acceleration associated with quasi-parallel shocks and an electric-field drift acceleration with quasi-perpendicular shocks.
