We discuss the role played by the horizontal flavour symmetry in
supersymmetric theories. In particular, we consider the horizontal symmetry
$SU(3)_H$ between the three fermion families and show how this concept can help
in explaining the fermion mass spectrum and mixing pattern in the context of
SUSY GUTs.
