An analytic proof is given which shows that it is impossible to extend any
triple of mutually unbiased product bases in dimension six by a single mutually
unbiased vector. The approach improves on recent computer-aided methods to
derive this result, and it represents one of the few analytic forays into the
properties of mutually unbiased bases for d=6.
