We analyse the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model near, but not in, the thermodynamic (infinite-N) limit. The ground-state phase diagram is obtained, and extended to non-zero temperature using semiclassical methods. These calculations are supplemented by a direct quantum solution near the line V=0. We observe in particular: (a) a quantum tricritical point for negative W on the V=0 line, and (b) a quantum singlet phase for large positive W that is not accessible via semi-classical techniques. We discuss the relationship of the quantum tricritical point to the quantum critical points familiar from condensed matter theory, and outline prospects for future work.
