Two signatures of the quark-gluon plasma - strangeness `enhancement' and
J/psi `suppression' - in nucleus-nucleus collisions are critically discussed. A
recently developed statistical coalescence model for J/\psi production is
presented. The measurements at the RHIC energies are crucial for disentangling
the different scenarios of J/\psi formation.
