It is demonstrated that many aspects of nuclear collisions, as for instance
the evolution of $\pi^{+}/\pi^{-}$ and $K/\pi$ ratios with $x_F$ and
$\sqrt{s}$, are influenced by isospin effects already present in elementary
nucleon--nucleon collisions.
