This is an introduction to the blackfold effective worldvolume theory for the
dynamics of black branes, as well as its use as an approximate method for the
construction of new black hole solutions. We also explain how the theory is
useful for the analysis of dynamical, non-stationary situations, in particular
of the Gregory-Laflamme instability of black branes.
