The $\pi$ and $\pi\pi$ decay widths of the excited charm mesons are
calculated using a Hamiltonian model within the framework of the covariant
Blankenbecler-Sugar equation. The pion-light constituent quark coupling is
described by the chiral pseudovector Lagrangian.
