Theory, techniques, and numerical results for retrieval of earth models including mantle heterogeneity, topography of the core-mantle boundary, and inner core anisotropy are presented using spectra of the earth's free oscillations. These spectra depart significantly from those predicted for spherically symmetric earth models and contain important information on the large-scale aspherical structure of the earth. The inversions have been performed by following two approaches: inverting the splitting functions which have been retrieved from split spectra and inverting the split spectra directly. The results obtained by these two methods are very much the same for the mantle structure. It is thus shown that splitting functions can serve as a convienient intermediate step in inferring earth models from splitting of the normal modes. With the current data set, most splitting functions retrieved can be explained by relatively simple three-dimensional models of the mantle, together with a zonally anisotropic inner core. The split spectra of a few multiplets, however, can be fit by very different splitting functions. A simple model of inner core anisotropy, which explains the splitting behavior of the core models without violating the constraints imposed by PKIKP travel time information, is developed.
