The Nuclear Propulsion Technology program being developed within NASA in cooperation with the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense is focused on developing the technologies to satisfy the mission requirements for the lunar/Mars Space exploration Initiative. The program consists of two elements: nuclear thermal propulsion and nuclear electric propulsion. The program is being set up to expedite the technology through a parallel, iterative, dual-path approach to concept development and technology development.
