A small number of planetary-mass companions (<15 MJup) have been directly imaged at large separations (30-300 AU) through high-resolution imaging. It is unclear whether these companions have formed within the disks of the primaries (core accretion or gravitational instability) or through cloud core fragmentation (i.e., binary companions). Measurements of the frequency of planetary-mass companions at very young ages can help identify the dominant mode for the formation of these objects. To provide new constraints on the timescale of formation of such companions, and thereby help discriminate among these formation mechanisms, we have performed a search for planetary-mass companions to 32 young brown dwarfs in the Taurus star-forming region (1 Myr) using the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope.
