We have observed high resolution (R 50000) 2 micron spectra of 30 cool dwarfs with spectral type from K7 to L8. The spectral region observed covers approximately 0.01 micron (20 cm-1) centered at 2.312 micron (4325 cm-1) in the CO 2-0 band. 2-0 CO lines are ubiquitous in all cool dwarfs with equivalent widths increasing from the G dwarfs into the L dwarfs. H2O lines first appear in the 2 micron region at about M2 V to M3 V and are conspicuous in the spectra of cooler M and L dwarfs. The CO and H20 equivalent widths are strongly correlated with effective temperature. Projected rotational velocities (v sin i) have been determined by comparing the observations with models and with dwarfs of known v sin i. Rotation increases dramatically from the M to L dwarfs. Kelu-1, an L dwarf with exceptionally large v sin i, is discussed as a suspect spectroscopic binary. The fastest rotating L dwarfs have rotation periods on the order of a few hours.
