Magnetic holes observed by THEMIS in the vicinity of dipolarization fronts are investigated. These structures have been interpreted as manifestations of the nonlinear stage of the mirror instability. However, in the present paper it is shown that their properties contradict theoretical predictions for the mirror mode. It is argued that these structures are instead remnants of reconnection processes that took place in the magnetotail.
