The global distribution of precipitating auroral particles is a crucial input to models attempting to describe the magnetosphere-ionosphere system. Often such a distribution is constructed using particle distributions inferred from auroral images, characterized in terms of integral energy flux and average energy. Certain properties, such as ionospheric conductivity, are then derived using an assumed functional form for the precipitating particles. These properties can be significantly affected by the assumed functional form so it is crucial that we gain insight into the relationship of the various functional forms and various geomagnetic parameters. The functional form of these distributions can also provide insight into the behavior of the aurora and the magnetospheric sources of these particles. Using particle spectrometer data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft, we characterize the precipitating particle distributions with several functional forms, and present an examination of the behavior of these distributions with respect to geomagnetic location and activity level.
