It has been shown recently that electrons can be accelerated up to energies of 100s of keV during an observed dipolarization front event. The electron energization occurred in a two-step process whereby electrons first gained a relatively small amount of energy (a few keV) near the magnetotail neutral line and then gained most of their energy (10-100 keV) from betatron acceleration associated with the earthward propagating dipolarization fronts. In order to understand the generality of these results, a study has been carried out using observations and simulations for different dipolarization events. The approach is to use a combination of global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, large scale kinetic electron simulations and THEMIS data when the spacecraft configuration is such that three of the satellites were located in the near Earth region between 10 and 15 RE down the magnetotail. The MHD simulations show an irregular neutral line that forms a series of dipolorization fronts with the strongest flows from the neutral line typically directed toward the three spacecraft. Electrons have been launched into this magnetotail region and are being examined to understand the nature of the acceleration and whether the two-step acceleration process (reconnection, betatron) is typical during these events.
