Chorus waves have been suggested to play a crucial role in energetic electron dynamics in the inner magnetosphere. In this work, fundamental interactions between large amplitude parallel propagating chorus wave packet and electrons in a dipole field are investigated using a test particle code, with chorus subpackets taken into consideration. Previous work used a monochromatic wave to model a single chorus wave element, leading to nonlinear processes such as phase trapping and bunching when the wave amplitude was large enough. However, high resolution observations of chorus wave packets show a modulation of the wave amplitude, forming so-called chorus subpackets or subelements. In this work, we adopt a simple two-wave model to represent the amplitude modulation, thus the chorus wave subpackets. By varying the frequency spacing between the two waves, we model the subpacket structure with different modulation frequencies and hence subpacket lengths. We demonstrate that when the resonance overlap condition is satisfied, the resulting change in the electron pitch angle and energy could be very different from what has been predicted by previous nonlinear theories assuming a monochromatic wave. Using previously observed probability distribution of the subpacket modulation frequency, we obtained the probability distribution of different types of electron responses. Our results indicate that the subpacket structure of chorus waves should be considered when treating nonlinear interactions between electrons and large amplitude chorus waves.
