Dipolarization fronts in the magnetotail plasma sheet are kinetic-scale boundaries separating energetic, tenuous reconnection jet plasma from the ambient plasma sheet. Observations show that the dipolarization fronts are associated with impulsive increase in the electric field and electromagnetic wave excitation. The energetic ion flux typically increases gradually with front proximity; while the energetic electron flux may either increase rapidly or decrease at the front. Interactions between inward-moving fronts and particles ahead of and behind them lead to local particle energization. Distinguishing between energetic plasma transport and local energization is challenging. We report on recent THEMIS multi-point observations of different energetic particle (ion and electron) populations in the vicinity of dipolarization fronts and corresponding physical modeling of local particle energization at the fronts.
