An interpretation is given for the anomaly in the time-velocity profile of shock waves at heliocentric distances of about 10-40 solar radii based on the frequency drift of hectometric type II bursts. This anomaly, discovered by Cane (1983), is an apparent effect and is possibly due to the peculiarity in the radial dependence of the electron density gradient in the solar wind transition region observed at these distances by scintillations of compact radio sources.
