In order to construct three-dimensional sunspot magnetic field models, the azimuth of the field chi and its possible variation with depth must be ascertained. A method of finding the variation of chi with depth is proposed. For a fixed point in the sunspot, the two Stokes parameters Q and U are measured at different parts of a magneto-sensitive line and then a refined version of the azimuth diagram, first suggested by Makita, is drawn. If the locus in this diagram contains loops, it may be concluded that chi varies systematically with depth; otherwise the locus will have a simple shape like a parabola. This method can be applied to the weaker fields outside sunspots, provided the detector is sufficiently sensitive.
