Matter distribution in the asteroid belt has been Fourier-analyzed and its autocorrelation and power spectrum have been obtained. It is found that Kirkwood gaps are essentially the interference pattern due to two spatial density waves and not merely due to three-body resonance phenomena of Jupiter, the sun and an asteroid. The Kirkwood gap phenomenon is due to collective effects between the particles of the system with the gravitational field of the sun, the planets and probably stars as well. A kinematic theory is developed for the asteroid belt and Kirkwood gaps from the point of view of stellar dynamics.
