We study craters formed when a 2.54 cm diameter steel ball falls into a container of small glass beads. A sequence of crater morphologies is observed depending on the scaled energy of the impact. At the lowest energies a simple bowl-shaped crater forms. At higher energies the craters have more complex morphologies including central peaks and slump terraces at the perimeter. The same morphology sequence is seen in impact craters on the moon and planets. The crater width is proportional to the one-quarter power of the impact energy, as expected when gravity rather than material strength dominates the energetics of the crater formation process.
