The article surveys the construction principles, setup, and operation of the automatic control system of large azimuthal telescopes. Particular consideration is given to the digital automatic control system, photoelectric automatic control of local devices, the television system, and the automation system. The system has been evaluated in all modes of operation for the observation of individual stars, clusters, planets, and the moon at varying azimuths and zenith distances. It is found that after correcting the orientation of the angle-to-code converters relative to the stars, total aiming error is less than 10 arcsec. Total star tracking error during automatic correction is less than 0.2 of the star image diameter.
