The paper discusses the design of major large azimuthal telescope systems with reference to the primary mirror, tube, weight-relief mechanisms, and drive systems. The primary mirror is considered in terms of the choice of its optical weight relief and the determination of reflecting surface deformations. The design of the tube is described, noting its triangular rod construction and procedures for minimizing deformations. The weight relief mechanisms are outlined in terms of their sensitivity which depends on the relative displacement of the mirror and the holder for the primary mirror. Calculations are made for the kinematic and force characteristics of the five drive systems.
