Hypotheses related to the sites of explosive nucleosynthesis in the galaxy and the dissolution of molecular clouds are formulated. In particular, it is suggested that in stellar systems, stars of mass greater than a specified critical value do not evolve to an explosive stage, while the largest star of mass below the critical value, upon reaching the supernova phase, dissipates the surrounding dense molecular cloud. Observations of CO emission from clusters are used to derive a value for the critical mass approximating the mass of BO-spectral type star (i.e., 15 to 20 times the mass of the sun). A mechanism that would account for the disruption of molecular clouds by supernovae is described; estimates of the resultant fluxes and timescales involved are also given.
