The current status of our knowledge of the energy source which drives the earth's dynamo are reviewed, and some physical models proposed for the dynamo processes in the earth's core are examined. Pioneer, Mariner, and Venera data on the magnetic fields of Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, and Venus are analyzed with a view toward the current controversy concerning the effectiveness of the mechanism of the precession dynamo in the generation of planetary magnetic fields.
