CubeSats are poised to become a standard observational platform for LEO studies of the the ionized and neutral gases enveloping the Earth. A number of successful CubeSat missions have been flown, but multi-point, high-quality scientific measurements of basic thermal plasma and neutral parameters have not yet been demonstrated. Such measurements are necessary to enable existing numerical models to successfully evolve into reliable predictive algorithms. This talk will highlight some of the instrumentation challenges that must be overcome to create such a capability using CubeSats, and describe some critical-path design obstacles and possible solutions now under development. The specifications of some CubeSat-ready instrument designs will be discussed, along with prospects for near-term breakthroughs that may enable rapid progress in the near future.
