Two arguments are presented which seem to prevent any significant increase in the surface abundance (Z) of heavy elements in the sun. Firstly, the observed depletion of Li-7 during the main-sequence phases implies the mixing of at least the outermost 1.75 per cent of the solar mass. Secondly any increase in Z in the outer layers produces either a dynamical or a secular nonradial instability which increases the mass of the contaminated layers enough to dilute accretion effects so as to make them negligible.
