[2776] Magnetospheric Physics / Polar Cap Phenomena
Scientific paper
Polar cap is the region where relatively homogenous low energy electron precipitation, known as polar rain, is observed inside the auroral oval. As the field lines whose footprints are located in the polar cap are believed to be connected to the interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF) and the characteristics of the polar rain are modulated by the IMF, the origin of the polar rain is usually explained by the direct entry model of the solar wind. In this paper, we would like to present the results of our study on the polar rain based on the datasets of precipitating electron flux and the far ultraviolet (FUV) spectra obtained simultaneously from STSAT-1, while the solar wind parameters were obtained from ACE and WIND satellites. We will also compare the characteristics of the polar rain for the electron precipitation and the corresponding FUV spectra with those of polar shower, an intense particle entry with fine structures which is supposedly associated with field aligned acceleration through the voltage drop of 100V - 3kV. In addition, we will present the results of our statistical analysis on the relationship between the polar rain flux and the IMF strength, which may support the field-aligned component of the solar wind as the origin of the polar rain.
