Global modeling has been used to to investigate the driving of the highly coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system by the solar wind. In this talk we review the ability of the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry magnetosphere model to simulate different types of activities including storms, substorms, and steady magnetospheric convection (SMC) intervals. We examine factors in the solar wind as well as properties of the model which affect its ability to simulate these different intervals. In modeling substorms we find that variability in the solar wind plays an important role in driving multiple events. In addition, we can obtain a seasonal variation in the substorms if we include solar illumination effects in the electron precipitation model. We also find that including ionospheric outflow can dramatically impact the evolution of the magnetosphere. When modeling storm intervals we find that the model can produce multiple substorms during the storm, but we do find that model tends to produce smaller substorms later in the storm phase regardless of the observed size of these substorms. When modeling SMC intervals we observed that these intervals are sensitive to increases solar velocity which tends to create more activity in the model.
