To understand the different modes by which the magnetosphere responds to the accumulation of open magnetic flux through dayside reconnection with the interplanetary magnetic field, we must first quantify the amount of open flux in the system and the time-varying reconnection rates which are related to the increase and decrease of this quantity. The most straight-forward way to do this is to monitor the changing size of the ionospheric polar caps, the dim regions encircled by the auroral ovals which map to the magnetospheric lobes, and the rate of ionospheric plasma flow into or out of the polar caps, invoking the theoretical framework of the expanding/contracting polar cap paradigm (ECPC). This talk will firstly outline the ECPC, secondly summarize the techniques for measuring dayside and nightside reconnection rates, and will thirdly discuss recent advances in our understanding of the relationship between substorms and storms, and other magnetospheric modes of behaviour.
