[2700] Magnetospheric Physics

Scientific paper

When the magnetosphere is undergoing global sawtooth oscillations, several rare phenomena are observed. The cause-and-effect connections between these various phenomena are sought. The solar-wind driver is a magnetic cloud passing the Earth at a low Mach number. The magnetosheath plasma has a beta less than unity and has unusual localized fast flows. The magnetosphere is flattened in the vertical direction, has a dayside field strength less than dipole values, has tail-like stretching on the dayside and at the terminators, and has extremely fast sunward plasma-sheet flows on the duskside and dawnside. In the ionosphere the polar-cap potential is saturated and the solar wind is unable to fully supply ionospheric currents.
