We discuss a theory of Gendrin mode and whistler mode waves with particular emphasis on their wave propagation and polarization. The Gendrin mode exists for only ω < 0.5 ωce, whereas the whistler mode exists for the entire frequency range ωci < ω < ωce. The Gendrin mode has much shorter wavelengths than the whistler mode and most importantly is nondispersive, which is not the case for the whistler mode. Both modes are shown theoretically to have approximately circularly polarized magnetic fields for both parallel and oblique propagation angles. The electric components of the modes have characteristics quite different from the magnetic components. The electric field polarization planes for both modes are not orthogonal to the wave vector k and are, in general, elliptically polarized. For the same propagation angle, the electric components of the Gendrin mode are found to have larger magnitudes as well as ellipticities as compared to the whistler modes. These waves are compared and contrasted by using GEOTAIL observations in minimum B pockets of the daytime Earth’s magnetosphere. Importance of these waves for electron acceleration in the inner magnetosphere through wave-particle interaction is outlined.
