The Space Physics Archive Search and Extract (SPASE) project Data Model for Heliophysics data is intended to enable science research across the broad ranges of heliophysics disciplines. The Virtual Observatories (VO's) enable data finding and usage usually within a particular Heliophysics discipline area, but each VO is somewhat different from the others in terms of the information they supply about the data in their domain and how these data are described. The vision for SPASE is to provide a common data description language to facilitate searching across the disciplines for data of interest. Since the release of version 1.0 in 2005 the SPASE data model has undergone a number of revisions. Representatives of the various Heliophysics discipline areas have worked together to evolve the SPASE Data Model and it has now reached Version 2.0. We explore and discuss how effective the current SPASE data model is at enabling the cross-discipline research that it was intended to support. Several multi-discipline research questions will be described and we assess how well the SPASE Data Model would support the determination and extraction of data sufficient to carry out the research. Our emphasis is on whether metadata content expressed by using the SPASE Data Model is sufficient to answer specific science queries and not on whether system services currently exist to support the queries. Strengths and weaknesses will be indicated and the needs for the future highlighted.
