The efficiency of shock cosmic ray acceleration and the modification of shock waves by the pressure of accelerated particles are investigated. The relative role of particle injection on a thermal front in the presence of background cosmic rays is evaluated. It is shown that for a prescribed Mach number there exists a critical value of background cosmic ray pressure, below which a thermal front is present in a shock wave.
