The present framework for study of planetesimal accumulation, in view of the simultaneous evolution of mass distribution and velocity dispersions, assumes that collision frequencies are much smaller than the orbital frequency. The mass-distribution evolution is obtained from the simplified Oort-Van de Hulst formulation of the coagulation equation. The formation of massive embrios leads to runaway growth of the largest bodies; velocity dispersions increase with growing planetesimals. The consequences of viscous stirring of gravitational encounters have not been fully appreciated. Fragmentation may also play an important role in the final evolution of the planetesimals toward the planetary stage.
