The origin of 'flywheel' currents that persist in the ionosphere after a geomagnetic storm are investigated by simulating a storm which occurred in November 23, 1982, using the NCAR Thermosphere Ionosphere GCM. Results of the analysis of the components of the high-latitude height-integrated Hall currents show that the neutral component of these currents may drive as much as 80 percent of the high-latitude current system immediately after the storm has ended, and may continue to dominate this system for 4 to 5 hours.
