Earth Magnetosphere: Charged Particles

Scientific paper

Approximate analytical equations are derived from an analysis of experimental data that make it possible in two bands of equatorial pitch angles of 0 - 30° and 30 - 90° to more realistically predict for energetic charged particles (protons and electrons) their pitch-angle distribution in the terrestrial magnetosphere. It is proposed that on a qualitative level the origin and existence of the Earth's radiation belts can also be attributed to the increasing rise (experimentally confirmed) in the pitch-angle distribution of charged particles with large pitch angles as the plasma approaches Earth.
