Particle data from the Aureol-3 satellite are used to study the effects of the polarity and amplitude of the IMF-Bz component and of AE on particle precipitation in the low-latitude cusp. It is found that the precipitation of H(+) and He (2+) ions often displays energy-latitude dispersions over 1 and 2 deg latitude which reflect the signature of the direct injection of plasma from the magnetosheath and the subsequent effect of the velocity filter. The results show that AE and Bz are best correlated with the position of the cusp boundaries when the ion precipitation in the cup is organized with ion dispersions.
