The terrestrial magnetopause motions and ground magnetic signatures for the September 9-10, 1978 period are studied based on IMP 8 solar wind data and ISEE 1 and 2 magnetopause motion data. The results indicate that sudden changes in the solar wind dynamic pressure are responsible for the disturbances noted on the ground. It is suggested that causes other than impulsive reconnection may produce the twin ionospheric flow vortex originally proposed as a flux transfer event signature.
