We approach the problem of weak peaks in high resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy in an analytical way using synthetic peaks superimposed on varying background. We use a criterion for a genuine line which also coincides with our observability criterion. We analyze the spectra using different computer programs. The simple integration of weak spectral lines (channel by channel) is not the best way to study weak lines and it results in large errors in the estimated intensity, especially for lines in high background regions. We address the weak line problems in two parts, (1) to search for new lines (this includes intensity determinations); and (2) to determine the intensity of a line at a given energy. We also discuss the problem of mapping planetary surfaces in the light of the analysis.
