Rossby-Haurwitz waves (RH waves) are waves with zero Lamb parameter and zero horizontal wind divergence. RH waves with zero zonal wavenumber exist due to turbulent interaction with smaller-scale waves. RH waves of zero zonal wavenumber can describe zonally averaged large-scale wave structures in the tropics; e.g., the tropical easterlies within the lower atmosphere, Venus' superrotation, the tropical semiannual wave, and the quasi-biennial oscillation within the stratosphere. Analytic mechanistic models are presented which simulate fairly well the observed structures of zonal wind, pressure, and temperature. The spatial and temporal configuration of the driving heat and momentum sources can thus derived.
