The region surrounding the constellation Puppis (longitude 240-250) has been searched for galactic spiral-arm tracers and external galaxies. Few or no foreground dust clouds occur in this area. From an examination of 18 faint galaxies discovered on deep Curtis Schmidt plates, the visual absorption out to the edge of the Galaxy in its plane in the direction of longitude 245 was determined to be four to five magnitudes. The position of the very young clusters Haffner 18ab and 19 supports radio astronomy results indicating that the bulk of the Galaxy's central plane is tilted some two degrees in Puppis at several kiloparsecs from the sun. Objective-prism spectroscopy and photoelectric and photographic UBV photometry of Haffner 18ab and 19 and of Ruprecht 44 and its surrounding field provide evidence for a major spiral feature at about 7 kiloparsec in Puppis. It is speculated that this may be either the +I arm (Perseus extension) or the +II arm.
