The National Weather Service of the U.S.A. is undertaking a major program to provide automated support to its field service offices. This program, called Automation of Field Operations and Services (AFOS), involves extensive use of minicomputers, video displays and high-speed communications to aid field personnel in their daily activities. In the next five years we plan to complete a National Distribution Circuit connecting all Weather Service Forecast Offices (WSFO's) and National Centers, plus 52 state distribution circuits connecting all lower-level stations with their parent WSFO's. Minicomputers at each of about 270 stations in the system will handle all communications, maintain the station data base, service the forecasters' data display requests and drive cathode-ray tube display units. Benefits expected from the AFOS system include more data, better forecasts, faster dissemination, greater productivity and dollar savings.
