The methane absorption band in the wavelength region around 3.3 microns was measured by a double beam vacuum grating spectrometer as a function of pressure, pathlength, and temperature and compared with theoretical computations. The monochromatic transmission was computed line by line from the individual line parameters. Correction of the existing line parameters and an experimental determination of additional lines were carried out in order to obtain agreement between theory and experiment. Discrepancies still remaining were explained by deviation from the Lorentz line profile. The super-Lorentzian line profile found from the experiment proved to be strongest at self-broadening and to pass into normal Lorentz line profile with increasing foreign-gas-broadening.
